Let's Talk About Cakes

A light and sweet topic today! Yummy!

(Sleeping Beauty)
Anxiety woman, anxiety.

I'm pretty health conscious but I do think cake is a marvellous creation and one of the things that makes life amazing. Cake, with its sweetness, its colour, and simply its presence. It's part of who I am.

In my family, we always have cakes, it's a must-have for any celebrations. Even for days when life throws lemon at one of us, we'd get a cake (Lemon cake sounds delicious), perhaps just a slice and everything would feel better if not alright. Or sometimes we have cakes, just because.

I have had over 100 whole cakes with my family (A simple calculation of totalling up our ages and not to mention all the other occasions) and cheers to more to come. The five of us, huddling around a cake, sometimes a big round dense cake or just two exquisite slices, sharing the sweetness and joy, and also the bitter in life. I guess you could say, I am so lucky, I can have my cake and eat it too. (Just in case you don't get it, it means having two goods things at the same time which is impossible)

Am I the only one who drools in this episode?

Now focusing back on me. I've got to share my favourite cakes!
Once upon a time, before the pandemic, I used to always go to this small bakery in Cheras Traders Square, Thong Kee Bakery. I'd go alone right after classes, a deserving treat for surviving.

Compared to bakeries like Lavender, their cakes are considered simple and they don't have as extensive range of selections but I love it. There's just something about that shop that makes me feel like I belong there. I don't mind the limited selections because I always get the same thing which nowhere else has (well, as far as I know), the Brownie Bar! Nutty chocolate enveloping soft gooey chocolate brownie and blueberries hiding in its layers of fudge. YUMMM. And it only costs RM6.80! Their other cakes and pastries are great, but my heart has a winner. DING DING DING.

Look at this beauty.

The next one which makes the list is the underrated muffins from McCafe. I don't know where they souce the muffins, I know McDonalds have collaborated with Secret Recipe for their cakes but I've never had muffins at Secret Recipe so... I'm gonna stick with it being McCafe's even though I know it's not technically a bakery.

My favourite from McCafe is the Banana Walnut Muffin. I know a muffin is not technically a cake, but I have the urge to include it here. (Now that I think about it, brownies are not cakes as well...whatever, let's not be pedantic bitches shall we)

I remember spending the last night of 2019 by myself in a crowded McDonalds, with my law notes sprawled over the bar table, enjoying my hot muffin and Mocha as we step into the disasterous year of 2020.  AHHH.

Well, I'm hungry now... but I just ate!!

Another type of cake that I like is Mille crepe cakes. I prefer its seemingly simple yet complicated structure over heavily frosted and whipped cream cakes. I have yet found the bakery which has the best ones to me. Feel free to gush over your favourite bakery which in your opinion has the best crepe cakes. As to flavours I'll have for my cakes are chocolate, fruits and coffee but I'm not picky about other flavours.

Here's some Mille crepe cake photos which are still in my phone. Enjoy.

I would love to try strawberry shortcakes someday. I also love scones but stretching 'cakes' to include them is too much, even for me.

Be sweet to everyone around you. But if there's a mean person irritating you, have a cake and ignore them! A piece of cake!

As a last note, I would like to thank my parents, who taught us, every milestone is worth celebrating.

  1. Calm down and eat cake😋 p.s. I’m also the culprit who drools over the chocolate cake in Mr Bean😂
