Short Writing: Ugly Poisonous Deep Sea Fish
Two best friends laid horizontally across the bed, with their legs up against the wall and their hair fanning around them. The occasional sound of lonely cars racing along the dark highway outside, reminding them time has not stopped during their pensiveness. The silence between them was understanding and comfortable, an invisible message hanging in the air: "I'm here for you".
Telulah turned her head to the left and looked at Fiona, who was so still as if she was holding her breath, afraid to disturb the peaceful night. She poked her friend's face, relieved that she was still alive.
"If I'm ever reborn, not that I would want to come to this goddamn world again, I want to be a dog", Telulah said with a deadpan expression, her voice croaking a little at the start. Her delicate eyelashes still wet and crumpled from the weight of her overflown tears.
Fiona, continued staring at the glow-in-the-dark stars scattered on the ceiling, afraid to look at her friend because it might break her heart.
"Why a dog?", Fiona scrunched up her button nose, seriously considering the choice. It's one of the best things Telulah loves about her, taking her random statements seriously instead of rolling her eyes like other people.
"I don't know. Guess I love dogs and I want to be cute next time"
After a momentary pause, Fiona put both her hands behind her head and said, "I want to be a poisonous deep sea fish. No big fish will eat me. And I'd feed on small fishes to stay alive. I'd be alone, deep in the dark sea. Free."
Telulah guffawed and sniffed away the leftover sadness, incredulous with that unexpected wise answer.
"Fuck, why didn't I think of that?"
"And fishes don't have memories.", Fiona added matter of factly.
"Why did I want to be a dog? That's even sadder than being human. My human masters would be my whole world while I'm just a small part of theirs. Idiot."
"That's true. But I'm just not a big fan of dogs. And I can be an ugly fish to scare away people.", Fiona continued, her imaginations growing wild in her head.
"It's dark under the sea anyways, no one would be able to see you"
"I'm fine with that, that sounds great"
"Well, if you're a fish, I want to be a turtle."
"Sure, I guess I'll allow you in my sea"
Telulah pushed Fiona's feet lightly with affection and they resumed their own personal reverie. Telulah thought it might not be a bad idea to be reborn afterall. If she ever gets to choose what she wants to be in the next life, she'll be a turtle, and she'll swim the entire ocean to find her bestfriend, the ugly deep sea fish. And somehow, life seems more bearable, and death looks less scarier, because her best friend will be in both.
